How Cab Fare Is Calculated in Tamil Nadu | 2026 Rates
Tamil Nadu taxi fares follow a simple formula, but most travellers don't know about driver bata, minimum distance rules, and hill surcharges that get added to the base rate. This guide explains every charge so you never get surprised at drop-off.
The Basic Fare Formula
Tamil Nadu outstation taxi fares use a per-kilometre model. The base rate for a Sedan (Swift Dzire / Toyota Etios) is ₹15/km for one-way trips and ₹14/km for round trips. SUV/MPV vehicles (Ertiga / Innova) cost ₹20/km one-way and ₹19/km round trip. Innova Crysta (premium 7-seater) is ₹23/km one-way.
The formula is: Total Fare = (Distance in km × Rate per km) + Driver Allowance (bata). That's it. No hidden multipliers, no time-of-day pricing for outstation routes.
What Is Driver Bata (Driver Allowance)?
Driver bata is a fixed allowance for the driver's meals and accommodation when the trip distance exceeds 130 km or requires a night halt away from home base. Bata is always quoted upfront, and it is not a tip.
Current bata rates: Sedan ₹500, SUV ₹600, Innova Crysta ₹600. For a 330 km Chennai-Trichy one-way trip in a Sedan: Fare = (330 × ₹15) + ₹500 = ₹5,450.
Minimum Distance Rules
Tamil Nadu outstation taxis have a minimum billing distance of 130 km one-way and 250 km for round trips. Even if your trip is only 80 km, you are billed for 130 km. This covers the driver's positioning cost to reach your pickup location.
Airport and city transfers are exempt from the outstation minimum and use a flat base fare structure instead.
Toll, Parking, and State Permit Charges
Toll charges on national and state highways are billed at actuals, the amount shown on the toll receipt. For the Chennai–Bangalore route, expect ₹400–₹600 in highway tolls depending on the entry/exit points used.
Interstate permit fees apply when crossing state borders. Tamil Nadu to Karnataka: ₹200–₹300. Tamil Nadu to Kerala: ₹150–₹250. These are declared upfront when you book, not as surprise additions at state borders.
Parking charges at airports, hotels, and hospitals are paid by the passenger separately. The driver will advise the parking fee before entering a paid zone.
Hill Station and Ghat Road Surcharge
Ghat road routes (Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar, Valparai) carry a hill surcharge due to higher fuel consumption, driver fatigue, and vehicle wear on steep gradients. Typical hill surcharge: ₹300–₹600 per trip on top of the standard per-km fare.
Always ask for the hill surcharge to be quoted explicitly when booking routes that include ghat segments. Reputable operators include this in the upfront fare, so it should never appear as a surprise at the destination.
Airport and Local Transfer Fares
Airport and short-distance city transfers use a flat base fare rather than per-km billing. Chennai airport (MAA) sedan starts at ₹800 for the first 20 km, then ₹27/km beyond that. SUV starts at ₹1000.
Local city rentals (hourly packages) are priced differently: Sedan ₹300/hour with 10 km per hour included, SUV ₹400/hour. Full-day packages (8 hours / 80 km) provide better value for multi-stop city days.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the taxi fare per km in Tamil Nadu?
- Sedan: ₹15/km one-way, ₹14/km round trip. SUV: ₹20/km one-way. Innova Crysta: ₹23/km one-way. These are base rates; add driver bata (₹500–₹600) for trips over 130 km.
- Is driver bata compulsory?
- Yes, driver bata is a compulsory allowance for trips over 130 km. It covers the driver's meals and night accommodation. It is always declared upfront, with Sedan bata at ₹500, SUV ₹600, Innova Crysta ₹600.
- Do taxi fares in Tamil Nadu include GST?
- Outstation taxi fares are not subject to GST for individual passengers under the current Indian tax framework. Corporate bookings with invoices may attract 5% GST, so confirm with the operator at the time of booking.
- Is the round-trip fare cheaper than two one-way fares?
- Yes. Round-trip per-km rates are lower: Sedan ₹14/km vs ₹15/km for one-way. For a 200 km round trip in a Sedan: round-trip fare = (400 km × ₹14) + ₹500 = ₹6,100. Two one-way bookings would cost ₹7,000, which is ₹900 more.
- Are there night charges for late-night taxi rides?
- No. HJ Cabs does not charge night surcharge on outstation per-km rates. The same ₹15/km (Sedan) applies at 2 AM as at 2 PM. Driver bata applies as usual for long outstation night runs.
